Course Details

Each course page in the Online Training Library is organized into a series of tabs, making it simple for you to quickly browse through and find the information you're looking for. When you the first arrive on a course's page, the Table of Contents tab is open by default, and from here you can browse through the chapters and movies contained in the course. If you're not a member of the Online Training Library, you'll be able to sample a handful of free movies from each course. The free movies are listed in blue. If you are a member, and you're currently logged in, you will have access to all of the movies, so I'm going to go ahead and log in now. So to view a movie, simply click its name. (Female Speaker: A navigation panel that you'll be using a lot in Adobe Acrobat is the Pages panel.) And when you're done viewing the current movie, just close its window and select another movie. (Female Speaker: A very common operation with pdfs in Acrobat is simply selecting text or--) Clicking the chapter titles alternates between showing and hiding that chapter's contents. Some chapters can be pretty lengthy and temporarily collapsing their contents makes it easier to browse the chapter titles and to get a better overview of the course as a whole. You can use the Collapse All and Expandable All buttons to collapse and expand all the chapters at once. The next tab is the Description tab. Here you'll find a more in-depth explanation of what the course covers, who it's designed for, and other relevant information, such as the course's duration and its release date. You'll also find that information up here in the header of each course page, too. Underneath the title you can see we have the author, the release date, the duration, and some other information here as well, such as the fact that this course is available on DVD. Now if exercise files are available, clicking Yes switches you over to the Exercise Files tab, which we will look at momentarily. And clicking on the author's name opens up the Author tab, which we will also examine a moment. But first, let's go back to the Exercise Files tab. If your Premium-level subscriber to the Online Training Library, the Exercise Files tab is where you will be able to download the images, video clips, filters, and other assorted files the author uses in the course, so you can work along with each movie using the exact same assets you see on screen. If you're a Monthly- or Annual-level subscriber, or if you're not a subscriber at all and are just browsing through our library, this where you'll find information on subscribing to, or updating your subscription to the Premium level to gain access to the exercise files. Exercise files are compressed in a zip format for easy downloading, and clicking on the file begins the download. The next tab is the Author tab, and here you'll find a profile of the course author and the list of all the titles he or she has recorded for the Online Training Library. The Author tab is a place to go if you enjoy teaching style of a particular author and would like to watch other courses by him or her. Next, we have the Transcript tab. In courses that have close captioning available--and you can see a close captioning is available by looking for the little CC icon in the header-- you can view the text transcript of each movie simply by clicking on the movie's name. The transcript may take several seconds to load depending on the length of movie. But from here, you can read to through the content of the movie, which can often give you a better idea whether or not the movie contains information you'd like to learn. If you're using the QuickTime standard or custom video players, you can even click the timecode to jump to that exact location in the movie. So if you find the content you want to learn, you can go right to it by clicking on the

timecode. (Female Speaker: And you can move from page to page in any way that you would be normally inclined to, for--) So you can see that it jumped me right to the one minute and twenty-two second mark of the movie. Again, that's only available for the QuickTime standard and QuickTime custom players, and we'll take a look at the different video player types later in this chapter. Just like in the Table of Contents tab, you can click the Expand all and Collapse all buttons to expand and collapse the list of chapters and movies. If you've opened multiple transcripts, clicking Collapse All and then Expand All is a fast way to close them all and start with just the list of chapters and movies again. Under the Transcript tab, you can also search the transcript for specific words or phrases. The Search this course field is identical to the one found in the header. Just type a word or phrase and click Submit. For example, let's say you're interested in learning more about creating bookmarks in this Acrobat course. You'd type "bookmarks" and then click Submit and in just a few moments, you receive a list of all the movies within this course that contain the word or phrase you're looking for, with each movie's name accompanied by a number, indicating how many times that word or phrase appears in the movie. Click a movie's title to see your phrase in context and determine if that movie contains the information you're looking for. And again, you can click the timecode next to the instance of the word or phrase to jump to that specific point of that movie. Next, we have the FAQs tab, where you will find any frequently asked questions, errata, or any other useful information about the course. As you can see, this course has no FAQs yet. Finally, we have the Preferences tab; here you can choose which type of player you want to use to watch our videos. Each of these options allows you to watch all of the movies from the course, but some players offer additional playback features. For example, I mentioned that the QuickTime players allow you to click timecodes under the Transcript tab to jump to specific points in the videos. Again, we'll look at the player types more closely later in this chapter. And lastly here we have the Clear Viewed Icons button. You've probably already noticed that as you make your way through a course an eye icon appears next to the movies you've already watched, making it easy to see which movies you've already gotten through and which movies you still need to watch. If you've completely finished the course and want to watch it again using the icons to keep yourself organized, or if you just find the icons distracting, simply visit the Preferences tab, click Clear Viewed Icons, and all the icons will be removed. Note that clearing the icons doesn't affect your movie history. Our system will still remember which movies you've watched, and you can still access your entire list of completed movies by going to the My Training menu and selecting Recent Activity, Movie History, or Course History.
